Initiative:

National Policies and Strategies

Where we work: Kenya

Rapid population growth and urbanization, with limited structural transformation, present major challenges to Kenya’s ability to achieve food security for all and become a higher-middle-income country in the medium term. If recent economic trends are any indication, the country risks not having enough jobs to support the projected increase in the labor force. Another key consideration for Kenya, is how to feed the country’s population in an increasingly volatile and dynamic global and domestic environment.

To support Kenya in addressing these challenges and building on the country’s vast potential, the CGIAR Initiative on National Policies and Strategies responds to policy demand and crises; integrates tools; and builds policy coherence together with its Kenyan partner institutions. For example, the Initiative is co-creating research-based policy information on the impact of the Ukraine-Russia crisis and the new Kenyan Government’s Bottom-Up Economic Plan. In Kenya, the Initiative is using a “Training-of-Trainers” approach to institutionalize the use of economic tools and has established a Kenya National Policies and Strategies Seminar Series as a platform for information sharing and coherence building.
