The global climate is changing due to increases in amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Although the carbon market nearly doubled from US$11 billion in 2005 to US$21.5 billion in 2006, global greenhouse gas emissions have continued to rise, a plain indication that a more practical and direct solution to cutting emissions is urgently needed. One of these practical solutions is to plant trees. In the Mt. Elgon region agroforestry has been a key strategy being used by the ACIAR projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, restore land productivity and increase food security.
