Maize is the first and the second (after teff) crop in terms of production/productivity and area coverage, respectively. It accounts for around 33% of all cereal production and 21% of total land area covered with cereals (Figure 1b). It is the most important grain product in the nation in terms of supplying food, ensuring food security and generating cash for farmers (CSA, 2022). Maize accounts for the majority of calories consumed, accommodates more than 9% of the entire population (Figure 1a and 1b), and the least expensive source of cereal calories (Rashid et al., 2010).
