Virender Kumar currently serves as the Research Director of the Sustainable Impact through Rice-Based Systems (SIRS) Department at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines. Virender's key expertise is in Systems Agronomy and Weed Science.
Virender's R4D program has been centered around five thematic areas aimed at achieving sustainable intensification of rice-based systems and climate change adaptation and mitigation. These include: (1) Integrated weed management program for rice-based systems, (2) Direct-seeded rice (DSR) systems as a sustainable alternative to puddled transplanted rice, (3) sustainable intensification of rice-based cropping systems, (4) climate change adaptation and mitigation, and (5) Big data analytics for data-driven approach in decision making and targeting.
Virender has published the results in more than 150 scientific communications, including >100 articles in peer-reviewed international journals. Virender did his PhD from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York in the US.
