Prem Bindraban
Deputy Director General and Director of Research and Innovation at AfricaRice
Prem Bindraban is Deputy Director General and Director of Research and Innovation (DDG / DRI) at the Africa Rice Center.
Prem has two decades of experience at Wageningen University (WUR), during which he was seconded at IRRI and CIMMYT, and has served as Team leader Natural Resources and Director of ISRIC – World Soil Information in Wageningen. Prem has been trained in soil and crop modelling and mapping, has developed university courses on Global Food Security and on Theoretical Production Ecology, supervised almost two dozen PhD and numerous MSc students, publishing over 300 research documents. He has extensive experience in rice science having supervised ten PhD students while at WUR.
He spent another decade with an NGO in agricultural development programs. He has been thorough in business development based on his global vision and experience in policy recommendations, generating significant funds exceeding 120M$. As the associate director, he co-drafted a “Strategic Plan for Agricultural Development in Africa” at the request of former UN-SG Kofi Annan.
Apart from trying to stay healthy by exercising, when possible, Prem loves the Mediterranean lifestyle, enjoying the beach, scenery, a great paella, gazpacho, lasagna, Greek salad and more great food with a (Belgian) beer, while enjoying some music.
