Background
WorldFish implements a diverse and growing portfolio of projects across small-scale fisheries, aquaculture systems, digital transformation, and food systems research. A high volume of reports, scientific articles, training materials, and technical documentation is generated by multidisciplinary teams, often requiring final content review to ensure scientific clarity, accuracy, and alignment with programmatic priorities.
As part of ongoing research activities to better understand small-scale fisheries and gendered labour dynamics in Mozambique, 49 Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) were conducted in Inhambane Province. The interviews, which focus on gleaning practices and community perspectives, were carried out in local languages and require translation and transcription into English for analysis and reporting purposes.
Scope of Work
The consultant will be required to translate and transcribe audio-recorded interviews from local Mozambican languages into English. Each interview is approximately 30–40 minutes long, totalling an estimated 33 hours of audio content. Each consultant will be responsible to translate and transcribe 25 interviews. The expected outcome is all the interviews transcribed in English. Specific tasks may include:
- Listening to all audio recordings.
- Translating the content from local languages (e.g., Xitswa, Xichopi, Bitonga, or others used in Inhambane) into English.
- Transcribing the translated content verbatim into clear, well-structured English.
- Ensuring the transcripts reflect the original meaning and cultural context as accurately as possible.
- Delivering one transcript per interview, clearly labelled and formatted in Microsoft Word or equivalent format.
Deliverables
- 25 complete and translated transcripts in English.
- A final summary note listing any challenges, clarifications, or audio issues encountered.
- All deliverables must be submitted in electronic format.
Duration and Timeline
- Total level of effort: 15 consecutive calendar days.
- Expected start date: 01 October 2025
- Final deliverables due: 15 October 2025
Skills, Experience and Knowledge (required to perform this job)
- Proven experience in transcription and translation, preferably in the context of qualitative research or social science.
- Native or fluent proficiency in at least one local language spoken in Inhambane (e.g., Xitswa and Bitonga) and excellent command of English.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and data integrity.
- Familiarity with fisheries and gender issues in Mozambique is an asset.
Reporting
The agency will report the progress of the assignment to Project Manager in Mozambique.
Payment and Terms
- Each consultant will be paid a lump sum upon satisfactory completion of all deliverables.
- Payment will be made upon approval of the final transcripts and summary note.
Evaluation and Selection
Applications will be evaluated based on the qualifications and experience of the consultant, the quality and feasibility of the proposed approach and work plan, the relevance of previous work examples and the most competitive proposal.
