Many farmers across the ASEAN region struggle to grow crops due to unpredictable rains and increasing water shortages. Researchers from the International Rice Research Institute, Royal University of Agriculture (RUA), National Agriculture and Forestry Research Institute, and International Water Management Institute came together for a two-day workshop to discuss their findings on innovative farmer-led irrigation solutions for Cambodia and Laos.
The researchers shared data and insights from surveys conducted to understand the needs and challenges faced by farmers, who are playing a key role in developing these solutions. They are intended to generate grassroots level information on the opportunities and constraints of various forms of irrigation that can help guide thinking and discussion on strategies for irrigation development most appropriate for smallholder agriculture in each country.
Priority actions for the short to medium term have been identified, including:
- Short educational videos in local languages
- Pilot demonstration sites where farmers can see solutions in action
This collaborative effort by researchers from Cambodia and Laos holds promise for developing sustainable irrigation solutions that can improve water management, increase crop diversification and yields, and enhance livelihoods for farmers in the region.
During the workshop, Dr. Borarin Buntong, Director of the Division of Research and Extension, RUA shared his excitement about how these solutions can empower farmers by increasing their income and food security.
