CGIAR’s Nature-Positive Solutions Initiative in Kenya received significant media coverage in 2024, showcasing its focus on sustainable agricultural practices and environmental conservation. Local and national media outlets featured the initiative’s success stories extensively. Prominent publications like The East African Standard, Nation Africa, and The Star reported and published op-eds on topics such as the importance of soil health for food security, the promotion of native trees to restore biodiversity, the establishment of aggregated farms in western Kenya and Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming for sustainable agriculture. These articles underscored NATURE+’s dedication to fostering agricultural resilience and balancing conservation with productivity.
Television and radio also played a pivotal role in disseminating information about NATURE+. Networks including KTN Farmers, Citizen, and KBC aired live interviews and features, focusing on issues like protecting indigenous seeds with legislation, seed fairs (in Swahili), value-addition for native crops, the importance of planting native tree species and the My Farm Trees program and BSF farming. These broadcasts highlighted the impact of soil testing, biodiversity restoration, and innovative farming methods. In addition, radio stations like Radio Citizen and Inooro FM amplified the initiative’s reach, engaging rural and farming communities in discussions about sustainable practices.
Social media and multimedia content have further enhanced the Initiative’s visibility. Platforms like X and LinkedIn were used to share updates and educational videos, making complex topics accessible to broader audiences. NATURE+ also published numerous blogs on its website to highlight the Initiative’s progress on aggregated farms, women leaders in local agroecology adoption, innovation in circular bioeconomy, community motivation for adopting native-positive solutions and, true-cost accounting for food. These efforts have not only informed the public but also built a sense of community among stakeholders, driving collective action towards nature-positive goals.
The NATURE+ team would like to thank Rachel Kibui for her tireless work with the media in Kenya to support the Initiative’s communications efforts.
