Bangkok, Thailand, 24–25 July 2025 — In a collaborative effort to enhance technical capacity for greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement in rice cultivation, the International Rice Research Institute, in partnership with the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), conducted a two-day technical training program for researchers and field practitioners. The training focused on the science behind CO₂ and CH₄ emissions from rice paddies and introduced participants to modern measurement techniques using new laser-based LI-COR Trace Gas Analyzers.

LOS BAÑOS, LAGUNA (17 July 2025)– Protecting public safety and environmental health remains a top priority as biosafety leaders gathered at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) to strengthen their shared responsibility in managing research, particularly those involving genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and other products of modern biotechnology.

Boeng Sneh Lake (3,924 ha) in Cambodia’s Prey Veng Province is a vital freshwater system that stores up to 80 million m³ of water—buffering floods, supporting 22,899 ha of rice fields, and sustaining 10,911 households across 44 villages with water, fish, and livelihood stability. Home to 50+ waterbird species and important fisheries, it’s protected through community fisheries refuges and a designated Multiple Use Area, yet faces growing strain from intensified irrigation, drought, agro-chemicals, overfishing, and land encroachment. In 2024, partners established a District Technical Working Group to coordinate action and safeguard the lake for people, food, and nature.

In 2025, as IFPRI marked its 50th Anniversary, it commissioned a review titled Taking Stock: Impacts of 50 Years of Policy Research at IFPRI to evaluate its standing as an international research institution and the influence and impact of its policy research and capacity-strengthening activities.

Environmental taxation—levying taxes on activities, inputs, or products that generate environmental harm—is a politically volatile issue. In 2024, farmer protests erupted across much of Europe, driven by participants who largely felt excluded from national and European Union green policy decisions, including reduced tax breaks on diesel inputs and taxes on nitrogen emissions.
