Rangelands cover around 54% of the world's terrestrial surface and support millions of pastoralists, ranchers and Indigenous people yet they remain overlooked in policy and investment. CGIAR science is showing how protecting rangeland biodiversity and strengthening food systems are deeply interconnected.

At the Africa Food Systems Forum 2026 in Kigali, CGIAR’s Scaling for Impact Program will explore how proven science can be connected with finance, partnerships and country delivery systems to transform Africa’s food systems at scale.

Food systems already account for a significant share of carbon market activity, but major sources of farm emissions remain underrepresented. A new CIFOR-ICRAF analysis shows where carbon credits are concentrated, where the gaps remain, and what this means for smallholder agriculture.
