French Translator – Editor

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is seeking a qualified French Translator – Editor who will be
based at AfricaRice Head Office in Cocody, Abidjan – Côte d’Ivoire. S/He will work under the supervision of the Manager Communications and Outreach.

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is a leading pan-African rice research organization committed
to improving livelihoods in Africa through strong science and effective partnerships. AfricaRice is a CGIAR Research Center. It is also an intergovernmental association of 28 African member countries, with headquarters in Côte d’Ivoire.

Position purpose
The French Translator-Editor is responsible to and reports to the Manager Communications and Outreach. He/she is responsible primarily for translating documents into French, revising, and
editing as well as related activities, at the Africa Rice Center. The purpose of this position is to provide language support to all Units and Departments of the Africa Rice Center. This support would be related to translation, revision editing of a broad range of technical documents. The French Translator-Editor also provides technical backstopping in the recruitment process of conference interpreters.

Position responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Manager Communications and Outreach, the French Translator –
Editor will undertake activities with specific tasks that include, but are not limited to:
Translation and revision
• Translate into French texts covering a broad range of technical, legal, or administrative
subjects dealt with by AfricaRice and ensure that the translation is both accurate and
stylistically appropriate.
• Produce accurate and complete versions in the target language, using the most
appropriate vocabulary and the commonly accepted equivalents of professional, scientific, or technical terms.
• Ensure consistency with other translators working on the same document
• Meet deadlines about translation/revision assignments, maintaining.
• Always ensure the quality of translations and provide input to the development of guidelines, policies and standards for translation and revision practices,
• Liaise with the client if necessary, to ensure that the message of the source text has been accurately conveyed in the target text.
• Self-revise and revise texts translated by other translators, including consultant translators, ensuring their accuracy and high linguistic quality,
• Identify possible inconsistencies or errors in the original text, including the author’s misinterpretation of source material, through consultation with relevant units or clients.
• Identify and recruit appropriate interpreters to service the Center’s events (meetings,
workshops, and statutory meetings)
Editing
• Assist in the production of AfricaRice publications for various audiences from receipt of ‘manuscript’ copy, through editing, design, and DTP to publication.
• Participate in Center-wide activities in publication and communication of research results and outputs.
• Liaise with authors, consultants, and printers to ensure quality of publications and
communicated outputs of work conducted at AfricaRice.
• Ensuring risks are considered in the delivery of the assigned duties and responsibilities.
• Undertake other duties as required by the needs of the institution.
Other
• Report to the finance department the list of deliveries of the month for the purposes of
charge back
• Identify best practices and monitor effectiveness of the Unit’s support to the Center.
• Prepare budgets for the activities of the Language Services Unit in accordance with the relevant policies.
• Ensuring risks are considered in the delivery of the assigned duties and responsibilities.
• Identify and recruit appropriate interpreters to service the Center’s events (meetings,
workshops and statutory meetings)
• Recruit, train and mentor an intern in the Unit to ensure the transfer of knowledge and the creation of a pool consultants who know the rice terminology.
• Make recommendations on the standard and quality of interpreting equipment.
• Undertake other duties as required by the needs of the institution.

Qualifications/Selection Criteria
Education:
A master’s degree in Translation from a reputable university or an institution of equivalent status.
Work experience and key competencies required:
• Seven years or more of professional experience in translating from English to French
preferably technical or legal texts of a difficult and complex nature in an international
organization.
• Experience in revising the work of other translators.
• Complete command of French as the mother tongue.
• Have an excellent knowledge of English is a must.
• Complete command of text processing software (Microsoft Pack Office)
• Very good knowledge of Computer Assisted Translation Tools (CAT)

Languages
• The candidate should be able to communicate fluently (orally and in writing) in English and in French.

based on performance and availability of funding.
