The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Director General’s Representative to represent the Director General in Ethiopia in leading the implementation of the Institute’s strategy to fulfil its mission.

ILRI is part of the One CGIAR, a dynamic reformulation of CGIAR’s partnerships, knowledge, assets and global presence, aiming for greater integration and impact in the face of the interdependent challenges facing today’s world.  ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe, and sustainable use of livestock. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.


 The Director General ‘s Representative in Ethiopia shall be responsible for the following duties:


  • Represent ILRI externally in Ethiopia
  • Build and maintain relations with the Ethiopian Government representatives and Ethiopia-based Heads of Mission and other strategic partners
  • Contribute to the development of ILRI’s strategic goals ensuring that they are aligned with the One CGIAR research and innovation strategy
  • Build and maintain relations with the Board of Trustees and the Ethiopia Representative, while ensuring that strategic issues are presented to the Board

Research program management

  • Advise the Director General and members of the Institute Management Committee (IMC) on priorities and strategic challenges relating to Ethiopia and its programs
  • Support the Director General and the IMC to position the Addis Campus as one of the leading hubs of the One CGIAR
  • Support research teams to obtain positive results in partnerships with national, regional and international institutions in research, extension, development and in public, private and civil society
  • Lead and oversee resource mobilization efforts to support research and capacity development in line with programs and aligned with One CGIAR Research and Innovation strategy
  • Contribute to the overall ILRI Strategy through the research area of their expertise
  • Ensure appropriate levels of programmatic and operational direction, oversight, and support to new and existing field offices in Ethiopia
  • Contribute to the development and the effective delivery of communication and outreach activities in Ethiopia
  • Oversee the work and professional development of various teams to improve planning, execution and review of program outcomes aligned with the strategic goals

Office management administration

  • Work with the People and Culture Group on organizational design and staff engagement initiatives in Ethiopia
  • Maintain continuous lines of communication, keeping the Director General and Institute Management Committee informed of all critical matters
  • Proactively manage security and mitigate security risks. Ensure a safe work and living environment by leading the implementation of safety and security protocols, staff care and well-being best practices
  • Oversee the work and professional development of Head of Administration and his/her teams to improve administrative and operational services to ILRI staff and Hosted Institutes on the Ethiopia campus
  • Monitor staff performance and development goals including coaching and mentoring the Head of Administration to promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement
  • Monitor program management and ensure compliance with audit, finance and operational policies and procedures

Perform any other related duties as may be required.


  • Kindly attach PhD in animal science, agriculture economics, environmental science, social science, or relevant discipline
  • 15 years of experience in areas directly relevant to livestock research for development, with at least 5 years in developing countries, managing human resources and administrative responsibilities at a senior level.
  • A solid understanding of the role of science in development, particularly in terms of ‘actionable knowledge’ and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Detailed knowledge of global livestock systems, in developing as well as developed countries, and how they relate to addressing the global challenges of hunger, poverty, climate change, human disease and environmental degradation.
  • An established record of research achievements
  • Excellent oral and written communication capabilities and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mobilise resources, foster and manage interdisciplinary, gender-inclusive, and multi-cultural research teams.
  • Preferably, knowledge of the CGIAR system and its research and development partners.
  • Ability to think strategically and to synthesize and distil key messages from complex issues.
  • Skilled motivation and leadership of diverse groups to bring out the best in both individuals and teams.

Post location: The position will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Terms of Appointment

This position is at job level HG 23 and it is on a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding. ILRI offers a competitive salary and benefits package which includes pension, medical and other insurances.
