The African Development Bank (AfDB) has mandated AfricaRice to lead the development of ‘Continental Investment Plan for accelerating Rice Self-Sufficiency in Africa’ (CIPRiSSA) to provide support to African countries as they strive to attain rice self-sufficiency.
CIPRiSSA provides a roadmap for accelerated action to reach self-sufficiency in rice by 2025. It provides background information on the rice value chain for each participating country, the investments required in priority areas to achieve certain levels of self-sufficiency in rice, as well as the benefits and profitability of the proposed investments.
The report of the CIPRiSSA study carried out in 10 countries (Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Madagascar, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania and Uganda) was released in December 2018 and widely distributed.
The AfricaRice Council of Ministers session has tasked the Center to extend the CIPRiSSA study to other member countries, so that they can also benefit from evidence-based information on the rice value chain and the investment options required to achieve rice self-sufficiency.
The CIPRiSSA report for The Gambia has just been completed and was released by the Honorable Minister of Agriculture of The Gambia Mrs Amie Faburay, on 23 April 2019, Banjul.
AfricaRice representatives, who participated in the launch ceremony, include Dr Samuel Bruce-Oliver, Director of Strategic Partnerships; Dr Marcel Nwalozie, Coordinator of the Support System for Accelerating Rice Self-Sufficiency in Africa (SSARSSA) initiative at AfricaRice, who spearheaded the CIPRiSSA study; Dr Aminou Arouna, Impact Assessment Economist, and Dr Mandiaye Diagne, Agricultural Economist (Value Chain Specialist), who were closely involved in the CIPRiSSA study.
