GRIN-Global Community Edition (GGCE) is an open-source software platform for managing genebank collections. It enables all genebank staff to conveniently capture and make use of data as they work.
The platform offers several benefits:
- Centralized Data Management: GGCE helps genebanks centralize their data, making it easier to track and manage large collections of plant genetic resources.
- Improved Access to Genetic Resources: The platform allows technical staff to search for and access genetic resources quickly.
- Supports Global Standards: The platform follows international standards for genebank data, helping ensure that the data can be used and understood globally.
- Scalability and Flexibility: GGCE is designed to be scalable, which means it can accommodate a wide range of genebanks with different sizes and needs. Its flexibility also allows it to adapt to various types of genetic material and research requirements.
- Cost-Effective: As an open-source platform, GGCE is free to use, which makes it accessible to smaller genebanks that may not have the resources for proprietary software.
CGIAR has put together a seminar series on implementing and using the GGCE platform in CGIAR Genebanks. Key partners also present tools and how to use them. Designed primarily for genebank managers and their technical staff, these seminars will help participants become familiar with more efficient workflows for daily operations.
By standardizing key processes, genebanks can better support one another and strengthen the breeding programs that make use of the materials they conserve.
The sessions are openly available to support any genebank that may want to adopt or is already using GGCE in their daily operations.
Presenters: CGIAR genebank managers and technical staff, The Crop Trust GGCE Support Team, other partners.
Target audiences: Genebank staff and other interested parties.
Date/time/duration: Weekly or biweekly at 8am (Cali, Colombia Time). Approximately 45 minutes per session.
The webinars will cover:
- CGIAR Genebank processes and diversity collections
- Best practices in genebank daily operations
- How GGCE can improve implementation in genebanks
- Needs and support for improvement
- Collaboration between the CGIAR genebanks and key partners such as The Crop Trust
