Food crisis: The 5 countries already hit hard by the war in Ukraine (ERT News)
ERT News (Greece) published an article stating that Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian ports and the knock-on effects of Western sanctions against Moscow have pushed up global food prices, raised fears of looming grain shortages and exacerbated concerns about growing hunger around the world. Ukraine and Russia produce about a third of the wheat traded on world markets and about a quarter of the world’s barley, according to IFPRI. Exports from the two countries – which also include sunflower oil and corn for animal feed – account for around 12 percent of total calories traded (See IFPRI blog post, How will Russia’s invasion of Ukraine affect global food security).
