The fisheries sector is a vital component of Cambodia’s economy. Around six million people are engaged in fisheries and related activities, either on a full-time or part-time basis. Fishery products generate an annual value of approximately US$1.5 billion, contributing between 8% and 12% to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP). Cambodia also has a long-standing tradition of processing freshwater fish into products such as fish paste, fermented fish, salted and dried fish, smoked fish, fish sauce, and dried fish for animal feed.
