The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) has published today a new peer-reviewed volume examining how global and regional agrifood systems may evolve over the next quarter century and what those changes could mean for food security, nutrition, livelihoods, and the environment.

The August 10 earthquake in Colombia affected urban and rural communities across Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda, Caldas, and Quindío. As humanitarian efforts address the most urgent needs, an equally important phase is beginning: rebuilding economies and livelihoods. What happens beneath a crop field when it rains? Where does the water go? How long does it remain in the root zone? How does it move through the soil profile, and when does it become water that is no longer available to the crop?

By combining youth-led extension networks, local government financing, and gender-transformative social campaigns, ILRI’s Women in Business project established an enabling environment that scaled dual-purpose poultry farming and boosted female empowerment across rural Tanzania.

Rural southwestern Nigeria is not typically considered a conflict hotspot, yet violence there has been on the rise. In 2023-24, there was a 40% chance that a woman farmer in the area lived in a household that suffered crop damage from farmer-herder violence, roughly a one-in-three chance that assets or irrigation equipment were stolen or destroyed, and a one-in-eight chance that someone in her household was physically assaulted.
