Thematic Areas: Sustainable Farming

Sustainable agriculture is paramount in the face of climate change and environmental degradation. CGIAR, as a leader in agricultural research, stands ready to confront this challenge. Regenerative agriculture has been proposed as a solution to regain degraded soils reducing the needs for agrochemical inputs and tilling, stimulating biodiversity, and capturing carbon to mitigate climate change. However published evidence for the claimed benefits is still insufficient and mostly limited to intensive systems in the global north.

This workshop will delve into CGIAR’s pioneering research on conservation agriculture, and regenerative practices that can address the production, environmental and climate challenges we face. Through dynamic presentations and insightful discussions, we’ll explore the evidence base for the benefits of these approaches. We’ll also identify research needs to further substantiate these benefits. Moreover, we’ll discuss how to tackle bottlenecks to scaling, considering gender and socio-economic factors and the imperative to find cost-effective and scalable delivery mechanisms.

Together, we will craft a unified strategy for climate resilient and regenerative agriculture that fosters synergy, addresses challenges, and drives progress.
