Dr. Govindaraj will join 2016 World Food Prize Co-Laureate, Jan Low, Principal Scientist at the International Potato Center, Johan Swinnen, Managing Director, Systems Transformation, CGIAR and Director General of the International Food Policy Research Institute, and Dina Esposito, Global Food Crisis Coordinator and Lead, Bureau for Resilience and Food Security, USAID, to showcase cutting-edge research and innovation that is contributing to the global response to the challenges of our food systems.

As the world confronts a perfect storm of challenges – from climate change, conflict, and the COVID-19 pandemic – it is clear that our food systems are not fit for purpose. In order to build food security and nutrition in the face of these challenges, we need transformative innovation in agriculture.

Effective solutions in the past have come from diverse sources – smallholder farmers, women, indigenous peoples, the private sector, and civil society organizations, among others. These sources shaped the Green Revolution, which with the help of CGIAR centers like CIMMYT, IRRI, and scientists like Norman Borlaug, lifted millions out of poverty and hunger. Since then, we have made great progress in increasing agricultural productivity and reducing hunger, but we still have a long way to go.

Today, we need a new wave of innovation to build on past successes and address the challenges of the 21st century. This innovation must be inclusive, putting the needs of smallholder farmers and other marginalized groups at the center. It must be sustainable, using natural resources wisely and protecting biodiversity amidst growing populations, ensuring nutrition and food security, and strengthening social equity. And it must be resilient, able to withstand shocks like climate change, financial crises, and pandemics.

CGIAR is hosting a side-event at the 2022 Borlaug Dialogue to showcase cutting-edge research and innovation that is contributing to the global response to the challenges of our food systems. This event will bring together leading experts from the public and private sectors, civil society, and the research community to discuss the policy frameworks and technologies needed to build more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient food systems.

We invite you to join us at this important event and help shape the future of food.
