16:00-17:00 Africa Pavilion From Policy to Implementation and Oversight: Translating Climate Policies into High Impact Investment and Delivery Plans in Africa

With COP27 being called an ‘implementation COP’, we need to have actionable discussions on how to move from planning Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) on paper towards action on the ground. This session will highlight ongoing work that demonstrates: (1) how Parliaments can become more engaged in helping achieve NDC targets and (2) the ability of well-formulated long-term strategies to provide an overarching future vision of climate resilience and contribute to low carbon economies in Africa.

19:30-22:00 Rangoli restaurant, Mövenpick Resort Sharm El Sheikh Putting food on the COP27 menu

The Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture (KJWA) is the only agenda item focusing on agriculture and food under the UNFCCC. It represents a critical opportunity to drive the transformation of agricultural and food systems in the context of tackling climate change. COP27 represents a key milestone for agriculture in the UNFCCC. Parties are expected to complete the Koronivia roadmap, and report on progress made over the past five years. Parties are also expected to engage in discussions about the future of agriculture and food systems in the UNFCCC, with the view of establishing a new mandate for the “Koronivia successor.” To maintain momentum around the KJWA and support discussions among Parties on the future of agriculture in the UNFCCC, WWF, FAO, CGIAR, Biovision and IICA are organizing a dinner for the “Koronivia family” on Tuesday 8 November, during the first week of COP27.

12:00-13:30 Senegal Pavilion Use of climate data to generate climate information services to better inform decision-makers

Sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing the adverse impacts of climate change with floods, droughts, heat waves, etc. To better deal with these hazards, it is imperative to inform populations (victims) and decision-makers with quality information (reliable and precise). In Africa, not only are data becoming rarer and rarer, but the majority remain unreliable (availability, representativeness) in community zones affected by climate change.

In this panel, different experiences will be presented on the production of data by IRI and the development of climate services for the benefit of communities in Senegal, Mali, Ghana and Colombia as well as humanitarian actions by NORCAP.

Ana María Loboguerrero, ClimBeR Lead
15:30-16:30  Water Pavilion  Data and science for water risk management

Data offers a new angle for development practitioners to observe, analyze and use large-scale evidence related to the impacts of shocks and stressors over time, and inform resilience-building processes. With the continuous advances in data science and earth observation technologies, scientists are working more closely with communities and policymakers to inform decision-making processes and influence positive change. This session will highlight the latest advances in featuring data and knowledge in assessing and mitigating climate and water-related disaster risks.

West Africa is recognized as one of the region’s most vulnerable to climate change. In this region, agricultural sectors are particularly subject to the adverse effects of climate change and its subsequent impact on the economy of rural households. The provision of climate information services is one of the best strategies for coping with climate variability in the region and strengthening the resilience of populations.

15:00-16:30 UNDP Pavilion Enhancing Food and Water Security in the Arab States: Challenges & Opportunities

Turning the Glasgow outcome into action, COP27 creates opportunities to mobilize action, advance on climate action and provide openings for innovation. This is important for the region as it is facing multiple internal and external challenges to sustain, manage and secure scarce natural resources: food and water. In fact, Arab States is one of the most water scarce and most food-import dependent region in the world. With current global food supply disruptions, and exponentially growing climate change impacts, there is an urgent need to increase adaptive capacity in the region to natural and anthropogenic shocks, putting socio-economic development and human security at risk.
