A milestone is a timebound target that reflects progress toward a planned result. Milestones include outputs, output use and outcomes along CGIAR Research Program (CRP) impact pathways as appropriate to the scale and maturity of the work.

In 2019, CRPs and Platforms reported progress against annual planned milestones. A total of 459 milestones were reported for the year, 69% of which were reported as complete. Twenty-three percent of milestones were extended, 5% were changed and 3% were canceled. In 2019, 80% of milestones had principal or significant gender relevance.

Milestones were also mapped to CGIAR System-level Outcomes (SLOs) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Thirty-one percent (116) were related to reducing poverty (SLO1); 49% (186) were linked to improved food and nutrition security for health (SLO2); and 20% (73) were related to improved natural resources and ecosystem services (SLO3). Fourteen SDGs were targeted by milestones, with the highest number of milestones (230) linked to SDG2 (zero hunger). Other key SDGs included SDG13 (climate action; 180 milestones); SDG12 (responsible consumption and production; 175 milestones); SDG17 (partnerships for the goals; 163 milestones); and SDG1 (no poverty; 155 milestones).
