Nutrition-Sensitive Trade: What Zanzibar’s Dagaa Fishery Reveals About Food and Nutrition Security
A recent study published in the journal of Environmental Research: Food Systems, examines how trade in aquatic foods can contribute to nutrition security across regions, using the dried dagaa (small pelagic fish) fishery in Zanzibar, Tanzania, as a case study. The authors introduce the concept of “nutrition-sensitive trade,” which refers to trade that delivers and balances access to nutrient-dense foods to multiple spatially distant populations, including nutritionally dependent or nutritionally vulnerable groups, without undermining the nutrition security in the communities where food is produced, whether agricultural, coastal, or riparian.

Kisumu County and the Alliance join forces to advance resilient food systems and multi-functional landscapes
The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT and the County Government of Kisumu have formalized a strategic partnership to advance climate-resilient agriculture, sustainable food systems, and biodiversity conservation in Kenya. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focuses on scaling innovative solutions—such as community seed banks, landscape restoration, and resilient crop systems—to address climate change, land degradation, and food insecurity. By combining scientific expertise with county leadership, the collaboration aims to strengthen farmer livelihoods, enhance seed systems, and drive sustainable development across Kisumu County.

Kenya’s frontier in nature-based solutions monitoring and evaluation
From February 24th to 26th, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development in Kenya, in collaboration with the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, hosted a workshop at the KALRO Headquarters, Kiboko, to validate and refine a Nature-Based Solutions Monitoring and Evaluation Framework tool, developed under the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency project.
