CGIAR participated as an observer in the Commission on Genetic Resources for Agriculture’s 19th Regular Session from 17-21 July 2023. CGIAR’s contribution to the Commission’s Programme In its written report and statement, CGIAR set out how its centers are contributing to the Commission’s Multi Year Programme, including by: Improving nutrition levels through biofortification of crops, food composition analysis and promotion
Sonja Vermeulen – Managing Director of Genetic Innovation, CGIAR – made the following remarks during the Opening Session of the International Plant Treaty Governing Body’s 10th Session. Honorable Chair of the Tenth Session of the Governing Body, Excellencies, Distinguished Participants, Thank you for inviting CGIAR to address this opening session. We have known for some time that unsustainable food
The International Plant Treaty governs how plant materials for agriculture are exchanged between countries. Every two years, policymakers, researchers and farmers gather to discuss how to make the Treaty function effectively and fairly. At the latest such event, the Governing Body’s 10th Session, CGIAR representatives helped shape discussions on benefit sharing from the use of Digital Sequence Information (DSI) and
A report recently released by CGIAR’s evaluation function (IAES) has commended the Genebank Platform as an example of systemwide cooperation. Evaluators noted the genebanks’ use of cutting-edge science and the development of strong policy and germplasm health functions. They called for ongoing, reliable funding for the initiative. Other recommendations included accelerating work on data curation and expanding outreach to a wider range
Germplasm Health Units conduct hundreds of thousands of tests and treatments every year so that farmers, researchers and breeders can access healthy samples of crop diversity. The movement of pests and diseases across borders causes enormous damage to biodiversity, agriculture and food systems. Take the fall armyworm, a pest native to the Americas, which has recently spread across Africa and

The International Plant Treaty provides a framework for plant genetic resources for agriculture (PGRFA) to cross borders safely and efficiently. This gives farmers options in a changing climate and helps researchers and breeders to innovate. But there needs to be a balance between providing access to plant materials and sharing benefits from their use with the communities who developed them.
