ILRI launches forage genetic resources plot in Nigeria

As part of activities to commemorate the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI–CGIAR)’s 50-year celebration and National Pasture Planting Day in Nigeria, ILRI-Ibadan launched the Forage Genetic Resources (FGR) plot on 28 June at the Nigeria Office in Ibadan.
According to ILRI-Nigeria Country Representative Tunde Amole, the FGR plot will house over eighty cultivars and the accession of tropically adapted and improved forage for livestock in Nigeria and West Africa.
Highlighting the importance of having reliable production of high-quality forage for livestock systems, IITA Director General and CGIAR Regional Director for Continental Africa, Dr Simeon Ehui, during his opening remarks, said the launch of the FGR, which is an extension of a global forage genebank, marks a significant milestone in a journey toward enhancing the productivity and profitability of smallholder and other livestock systems in Nigeria.
