Farmers in Gujarat, India are learning about the scientific cultivation of monsoon maize through a WhatsApp-delivered course.

Launched on 31 August 2024 by Anand Agricultural University through the AgroTutor Academy, the course allows farmers learn best practices for increasing yields, managing pests, and adopting sustainable cultivation techniques – all from the convenience of their homes.

AgroTutor Academy, which is part of the ICTforAg Learning Network, hosts micro-learning modules tailored for last-mile beneficiaries, allowing partners to develop and deliver courses to their target groups. The WhatsApp-based micro-courses are designed to equip farmers and extension services with low digital literacy with essential skills and knowledge about technology, creating a learning experience that adapts to their pace and convenience. The course format requires no typing; users simply click buttons to navigate through the content. Available in multiple languages, the courses ensure inclusivity and help break down language barriers.

Participants in the course were able to complete the course at their own pace. Upon completion, they received a certificate recognizing their achievement. Farmer Sanghada Sanjaybhai Kalsingbhai remarked “I completed the course alongside 15 others who also participated. The course was excellent, everything was clearly explained in detail, from increasing yields to controlling pests and insects, and much more. I even forwarded the course and shared my certificate with friends.”

Another farmer, Bhuriya Saburiben Kamjibhai, shared her thoughts on the course, saying, “I really enjoyed the course, it was easy to complete. All I had to do was watch the videos and click a button. I’m excited to take more courses like this in the future.”

According to the United Nations Development Programme, approximately 70% of rural households in India rely on agriculture for their livelihoods, yet many lack access to essential resources and information, which often alienates them from advancements in agricultural practices. Many farmers face significant challenges due to limited access to modern agricultural techniques and expert guidance. For years, rural farmers have struggled to access essential resources, particularly in regional languages, which has often alienated them from advancements in agricultural practices.

By leveraging digital platforms like WhatsApp, AgroTutor Academy offers accessible, language-specific courses designed to bridge knowledge gaps. The WhatsApp-based courses provide farmers with the information they need to improve their practices and productivity. With a focus on localized content, AgroTutor Academy serves as a valuable resource that can improve the livelihoods of rural farmers and provide them with essential skills and knowledge.

“It was a fantastic experience developing this course, and it’s great to see such positive feedback,” said Gaurangkumar Bhabhor, scientist at Anand Agricultural University and course coordinator for the scientific cultivation of monsoon maize course. “What I particularly appreciate about AgroTutor Academy is the ability to create courses in regional languages. I also like how it supports the creation of multimedia content, enhancing the learning experience Additionally, the platform allows us to update or modify the content as needed and reach hundreds of people simultaneously.”
