Rutger de Witt Wijnen

Rutger de Witt Wijnen is CGIAR’s Global General Counsel and Global Director of Legal and Governance. He brings more than 30 years of experience in legal, governance and regulatory functions in both the public and private sectors, including roles as partner in international law firms and General Counsel at international organizations and at a non-profit scale-up.

Prior to joining CGIAR, he was the General Counsel and Director Government Affairs at The Ocean Cleanup, after having served as interim General Counsel at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and as General Counsel at the Green Climate Fund, where he also fulfilled the ethics and integrity roles. At the Global Fund and the Green Climate Fund, he worked closely with the Board and Board Committees, as well as the Board Secretaries. As partner at international law firms, he focused on climate chance and finance.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Law from the University of Leiden, and also completed the program for non-executive directors at the Rotterdam School of management (Erasmus University).
