Livestock keeping is common in many cities in India, driven by the demand for animal-source foods, particularly perishable milk. In this study, a census was carried out in 34 peri-urban villages in five cities across different regions in India to identify and characterize their smallholder dairy farms. The findings will help to inform the design of appropriate interventions to improve smallholder dairy productivity.
