In response to grand challenges in global cocoa production (e.g. poverty, low productivity, deforestation), major chocolate companies have committed to a sustainable cocoa sector by 2020. Their efforts are supported by governments, NGOs and responsible investors. Focusing on Ghana, our study aims to identify synergies and trade-offs between different approaches to sustainability, the potential for inclusive business models, and possible blind spots toward sustainability.
