This article summarizes current standards in sub-Saharan Africa related to aflatoxins and discusses their coherence and evidence-base. Using recent research findings, the paper then estimates the health risks of consuming foods contaminated with aflatoxins in Kenya. It also estimates the negative health and economic effects that would arise from strict application of different standards for aflatoxins. The results are discussed in light of health and nutrition goals.
