Guatemala is a center of origin and diversity for globally important crops such as maize, common bean, pumpikin, papaya, avocado, cocoa, cassava, sweet potato, and chili, as well as numerous less-know crops. This bounty of agrobiodiversity derives from diverse terraine and flora and faunain this hotspot of global biodiversity, as well as the rich cultural diversity of this land, where numerous distinct ethnic groups coexist.
