Chapter 3. Modes of transmission of MLN-causing viruses

Plant viruses have devised several mechanisms for infection, transmission and spread among the hosts. Insect vectors play a key role in the survival and propagation of the plant viruses. The epidemiology of plant viruses is indeed largely dependent on the insect vector population dynamics including their long- and shortrange dispersal, host selection and feeding behaviours (Eigenbrode and Bosque-Perez, 2016). In the case of transmission and spread of MLN-causing viruses, the following appear to play a prominent role: • Insect vectors • Seed contamination and transmission • Transmission through soil • Mechanical transmission.
