Scientist II - Plant Pathology and Host Plant Resistance (Los Banos, Philippines and Nanjing, China)
The Rice Breeding Platform will deliver on key priorities of the Strategic Plan in the areas of breeding for favorable environments, breeding for unfavorable environments, host plant resistance, quantitative genetics, seed and delivery systems and germplasm evaluation.
This position will lead and manage the different ongoing and incoming research projects related to fungal diseases of rice, such as blast, false smut, brown spot, etc. This will include leading coordination of IRRI’s research programs on plant protection for japonica rice at the IRRI – JAAS Joint Lab in Nanjing, China, which is hosted by the Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences (JAAS). She/he will focus on germplasm harnessing, characterization, and development for new sources of resistance genes against the current and emerging fungal diseases of rice using both conventional and advanced technologies; develop robust phenotyping and screening methods to emerging and important fungal rice diseases such as panicle blast and false smut; explore the integration of resistance genes, avirulence genes and pathogen population dynamics for disease monitoring, surveillance and precise deployment of resistance genes; supervise and provide technical guidance to graduate students, trainees and NARES partners; investigate the genetic basis of quantitative resistance to multiple diseases; collaborate with IRRI colleagues and partners in appropriate experimental design of complex field and confined experiments intended for scientific discoveries and set up uniform data management structures compatible with data management strategies of IRRI. Work with the varietal development team for effective use of resistance/tolerance genes in varietal improvement program.
This position will be working in the IRRI Headquarters in Los Banos, Philippines 9 months per year and in the IRRI-JAAS joint laboratory in Nanjing, China 3 months per year. This is an international position, open to all nationalities.
