AfricaRice is recruiting a “Manager of Marketing and Communication” who will be based at the AfricaRice Head Office in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is a leading pan-African rice research organization committed to improving livelihoods in Africa through strong science and effective partnerships.  AfricaRice is a CGIAR Research Center. It is also an intergovernmental association of 28 African member countries, with headquarters in Côte d’Ivoire.

 

Context

The Manager Marketing and Communications will increase the reach and impact of the profile, visibility, image and reputation of AfricaRice through high value and influential marketing, internal and external communications, and public relations activities, at the global level, in order to significantly contribute to delivery on the Center’s mission.

 

The incumbent will report to the Director of Strategic business initiatives and will work with all the Departments at AfricaRice to develop and implement a marketing and communications strategy across a range of reactive and strategically planned opportunities in print, media, events and online. The Manager will also have an active role in implementing marketing and communication activities, particularly around direct marketing and support to the Director General of AfricaRice.

 

Position Responsibilities

The Manager of Marketing and Communication Unit ‘s responsibilities will be as following under each below pillar:

 

Core Function

  • Raise the profile and visibility of AfricaRice’s mission and impact with attention to strategic partners, donors and policy makers
  • Prepare and implement an annual communication plan in line with AfricaRice’s communications strategy
  • Develop and oversee the dissemination of all internal and external communication, whilst ensuring consistency and excitement in the key messages
  • Write, edit, and oversee the production of marketing material, prints and other communication products, including the Centers annual report, media releases, promotional materials, flagship publications, impact stories, blog articles, policy briefs, multimedia products and e-newsletter, PowerPoint presentations providing information to CGIAR systemwide communication campaigns and requests for information from AfricaRice and its partners/stakeholders and media
  • Provide content and manage the AfricaRice website
  • Provide support and strategic advice to research programs and projects on the effective dissemination of research results
  • Coordinate media relations and social networking activities
  • Manage AfricaRice’s presence at major events and coordinate displays/exhibits
  • Build positive relationships with key stakeholders and respond to their information needs
  • Monitor and synthesize relevant news relating to the global and African rice sector for management and researchers
  • Link with CGIAR System Organization Communications on campaigns and co-publication
  • Ensure the AfricaRice brand meets expectations through monitoring marketing trends and partner and funder feedback
  • Manage risks associated with external communications and lead on reputation management
  • Keep track of media mentions and the online footprint of AfricaRice
  • Effectively manage the outsourcing of communication activities when necessary
  • Contribute to and strengthen fundraising proposals and funder reports to ensure robust and creative marketing and communication considerations are adopted
  • Act as the first point of contact for the Director General with regards to AfricaRice’s external communications and provide support with conference presentations
  • Carry out other duties as required by the needs of the Center and as reviewed from time to time by the supervisor.

 

Partnership Development

  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing and new partners including private sector partners and position them as strategic partners that will add value to the Center.
  • Proactively identify and track partnership opportunities including understanding the potential of partners, which will lead to the development of new, innovative, and productive strategic partnerships that will add value to the Center.
  • Work with all departments at AfricaRice to introduce, recommend, present and/or demonstrate possible partnership mechanisms.
  • Establish a data and information base on strategic partnerships, including data on the perception of the Center and its services by partners, and carry out evaluations/analyses/interpretations of the data and information in order to strengthen and improve strategic partnership relations.
  • Carry out other duties as required by the needs of the Center and as reviewed from time to time by the supervisor.

 

People Management

  • Develop and maintain a high performing culture of capacity development within the Center
  • Provide support to staff to enable delivery on the enable delivery on the Unit’s work plan
  • Conduct meetings, performance management appraisals and support professional development of the members of the Unit when necessary
  • Establish a communications networking system with a variety of institutions and individuals across a range of sectors (public, private, third parties, etc…)
  • Keep management fully informed on key opportunities and challenges faced by the Unit through regular reporting.

 

Strategy, Finance and Operations

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of an annual budget and operational work plan for the Unit.
  • Provide inputs to the establishment of the Centers work plan and budget in line with its vision and mission.

 

Qualifications /Selection Criteria

Education and work experience: 

  • S/He must hold a master’s degree in Communication, Marketing, Journalism, Public Relations or any related field
  • Must have Minimum of 5 years demonstrated experience in marketing, communications, journalism or public relations with international organizations or multinational companies.

Knowledge and Key Competencies:

  • Demonstrated skills, knowledge and experience in the design and execution of marketing, communications and public relations activities (including digital media, and the production of electronic and print materials and publications)
  • Demonstrated successful experience in writing for different purposes, making presentations and negotiating with media and suppliers
  • Excellent understanding of how to use marketing tools and techniques to increase the visibility, profile and reputation of an organization
  • Good understanding of social media and the impact technology is having on communications and collaboration
  • Experience in developing and managing budgets, hiring, training, supervising and appraising personnel
  • Commitment to working with shared leadership and in cross-functional teams
  • Demonstrated experience in change management and ability to work under minimal supervision.
  • Able to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and demonstrate composure under stress and in times of uncertainty
  • Proficient in the use of IT Systems including Microsoft Office packages
  • Strong creative, strategic, analytical, organizational and interpersonal skills
  • Strong self-motivation and a commitment to team-work and working in a collegiate manner
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Ability to effectively interact with a wide range of staff at all levels in a multicultural and multidisciplinary environment.

Language

  • The candidate should communicate fluently (oral and writing) in both languages English and French or having a good working knowledge in the other language.

Others

  • This position will involve travels within Côte d’Ivoire and internationally, including to post-conflict/challenging states
  • There is an expectation that there will be occasional out of hours travel and external/internal events.

  • The contract will be for an initial period of three (03) years with the possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding.
