About the Role

Food environments play a pivotal role in shaping consumer behavior, especially in the context of rapidly changing food landscapes in the global south. Understanding how these evolving food environments influence dietary choices is crucial, particularly for positioning aquatic foods as sustainable sources of protein and micronutrients in regions where they are of significant public health importance. Additionally, such analyses can bolster advocacy efforts for the inclusion of aquatic foods in policy, planning, and investment decisions at national and regional levels. WorldFish is seeking an intern to assist in conducting a study that assesses food environments in three Southeast Asian countries and their impact on changing diets, including aquatic food consumption. This study will also involve forecasting the potential role of aquatic food systems in the future and the opportunities they present for enhancing food and nutrition security, promoting gender equity, and fostering sustainable livelihoods.

Scope of Work

The scope of work will encompass data cleaning, analysis, and manuscript preparation in collaboration with the project team. Over a six-month period, the research intern will work closely with WorldFish's senior scientist in nutrition and public health, as well as WorldFish country partners from Bangladesh, Cambodia, and Myanmar, to contribute to the following evidence-based analyses and outputs:

  • Literature Review: Conduct a comprehensive review of existing literature on food environments in Southeast Asia, dietary choices, and the role of aquatic foods, with a focus on Southeast Asia.
  • Data Cleaning and Analysis: Clean collected data and conduct analyses using appropriate statistical methods or qualitative analysis techniques.
  • Communication: Collaborate with research partners and stakeholders to ensure the smooth delivery of project outputs. Effectively communicate findings, progress, and challenges with the project team and relevant stakeholders.
  • Research Output Completion: Under the guidance of the project team, prepare and submit manuscripts for journal publication and present research findings in internal WorldFish meetings.

The successful candidate will:
