The International Potato Center (CIP) is seeking to recruit one (1) dynamic and experienced Associate Scientist, Nutritionist to provide support in the implementation of “Enhancing Agricultural Recovery and Combatting Malnutrition in Drought-Affected Southern Madagascar Utilizing Nutritious, Climate-Resilient Vitamin A Sweetpotato“ BHA project in Madagascar.
The Position: This position will be hosted by AfricaRice in Madagascar. The selected candidate will be based in Taolagnaro, they will report to the Senior Project Manager and Country Liaison Scientist.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and develop the collaboration strategy with the Regional Nutrition offices in the 3 regions for the design and implementation of the nutrition training program
- Conduct formative research to design an effective community level training program to improve household diet quality and young infant feeding strategies, including an understanding of current feeding practices of children under five years of age including the introduction and use of the Healthy Baby Toolkit (which focuses on frequency of feeding and the density of complementary foods provided to the child)
- Design a training step down program to be implemented in target Fokontany and assure the smooth implementation of the training program
- Ensure the production of quality training tools in French and Malagasy
- In coordination with the data management specialist, design the monitoring system for the training program
- Conduct periodic focus group interviews to assess the quality of the training program and ways to improve update of improved practices by the households
- Serve as a member of the senior management team, representing the project as needed in district and regional meetings.
- Coordinate the preparation of biweekly progress reports on the nutrition component of the project
- Coordinate with the monitoring and evaluation team to design the final assessment of nutritional knowledge, feeding practices, and other nutrition-related modules in the endline survey
- Produce at least one research article on the nutrition training program and its effectiveness
Selection Criteria
- At least Master’s Degree in Nutrition or closely related field. PhD preferred
- With PHD, at least 6 years of relevant work experience
- With Masters, at least 10 years of relevant work experience
- Fundraising experience
- More than 2 publications in peer-reviewed journals
- Fluent French, Malagasy and English speaking skills
- Excellent writing skills in French and Malagasy; good writing skills in English
- Knowledge of Malagasy dialects in the South preferred
- Experience managing staff members
- Familiarity with government nutrition programs
- Willingness to travel by road frequently throughout Southern Madagascar and conduct field research under challenging conditions
