Harnessing Statistics for Evidence-Based Policy Making in Kenya: The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and the International Food Policy Research Institute sign a Memorandum of Understanding
Sound data together with cutting edge analytical tools are the basis for evidence-based policy- and decision making. With that common understanding the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) and the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) agreed on a partnership to jointly develop innovative datasets and conduct capacity building activities in Kenya. To institutionalize this collaboration, the two parties signed a memorandum of understanding on 29th March,2022 at the KNBS headquarter in Nairobi, Kenya.
Activities of joint interest and collaboration include the joint construction of national and county cluster Social Accounting Matrices (SAM). The new Kenya national SAM will make use of the recent release of rebased National Accounts statistics together with 2016 Supply and Use Tables (2016 SUTs) and the latest household survey data. The county cluster SAM will be the first of its kind for Kenya and is expected to play a key role as a basis for policy formulation and public investment decision making at the sub-national level. Other important areas of collaboration are the planned partnership on agricultural and household surveys with a renewed focus on food, nutrition, and climate change.
IFPRI’s engagement with KNBS will be supported by ONE CGIAR initiatives, especially the “National Policies and Strategies” (NPS) for Food, Land, and Water System transformation.
