Comparative Advantage is one of the most powerful theoretical insights in economics. It provides a useful framework for identifying areas where CGIAR’s efforts are most crucial to achieving its mission—to deliver science and innovation that advance the transformation of food, land, and water systems in a climate crisis.
Applying a Comparative Advantage analysis can produce a more streamlined, purposive, and intentional research portfolio. It is designed to harness the various competencies of CGIAR entities, and other organizations with which the system interacts, to make the ‘sum of its parts’ as large as possible. Beyond portfolio management, pushing Comparative Advantage thinking can help with positioning CGIAR at the frontier of Agricultural Research for Development (AR4D).
Comparative Advantage is starring an original video and podcast series with former ISDC member Professor Christopher B. Barrett (Cornell University) and Professor Joshua Graff Zivin (University of California San Diego). The first part presents the needs and benefits of the Comparative Advantage concept. The second part develops the Comparative Advantage theoretical basis for beginners. The third part discusses practical applications for CGIAR and other entities in the AR4D space.
