The bolstering alliance of One CGIAR and partners is providing effective platforms for addressing issues related to developing resilient and sustainable food systems in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Rice is becoming one of the major pillars in food and income security, with demand steadily increasing owing to several drivers, leading to widening dependence on imports albeit the enormous potential for local production. This session will tackle issues related to rice-based agri-food and nutrition systems to meet the growing demand in SSA. It will bring together experts from One CGIAR and partners to showcase innovative interventions and to address major challenges and bottlenecks hindering faster progress, leveraging global knowledge and resources. The session will address strategies and innovations for sustainability, diversity and equity, resilience to global shocks to which SSA is most vulnerable, and supporting policies, among others. The outcomes of this session will help guide future research directions and stimulate investment in rice-based systems in SSA.

The side event will encompass two components. A brief account of critical innovations ready for deployment, and a panel discussion of leaders to debate overarching strategies to attain continental food, nutrition and income security through rice-based systems, speed progress through empowering policies and to bring global synergies for impact at scale.
