Fish is the animal-source food with the most rapidly growing production in the world, and in low-income, food-deficit countries, it is often the cheapest and most accessible for poor consumers.

Fish is rich in vitamin B12, calcium, iron, zinc and fatty acids, and some small fish are especially rich in vitamin A. When consumed as part of a meal, fish can increase the absorption of iron and zinc from other foods.
