Country Event: Fish for Livelihoods, Shwe Ngar (Golden Fish) Mobile App Launch

The Fish for Livelihoods project launched the newly developed Shwe Ngar (golden fish) mobile App, providing information on aquaculture technologies, basic human nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene practices for buyers and sellers of aquaculture and fisheries related products.

Capture fisheries (wild fish in fresh and seawater) are declining in Myanmar, yet 60% of the country’s animal sourced food is fish. To meet the growing demand for fish, it is essential that Myanmar develops a sustainable aquaculture industry that minimizes potential environmental impacts and ensures aquaculture practices are socially and economically inclusive.

The Fish for Livelihoods project, implemented by WorldFish and funded by USAID, is an initiative to increase fish production, labor productivity, food availability, and fish consumption, especially for women and children from vulnerable households in Myanmar.

The Shwe Ngar (Golden Fish) mobile app is one of project’s many initiative to help establish linkages between market actors throughout aquatic food system value chains and provides users with information on aquaculture technologies, basic human nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene practices.
