Initiative:

Aquatic Foods

Overview

The CGIAR Initiative on Aquatic Foods has a global and regional focus, with countries being prioritized as a result of the Initiative’s work. Selected countries for initial data collection are listed below.

The Initiative’s target countries are those in which aquatic foods play a crucial role in providing micronutrients and essential fatty acids in the diets of nutritionally vulnerable people, as well as making important contributions to employment and trade. Many of these countries are facing some of the most severe impacts of climate change.

In countries where dependence on coastal fisheries for food and nutrition security is very high, the Initiative focuses on boosting production and making it more resilient through new technologies, policy change and improved governance. In addition, the Initiative is working to ensure farmers in all target countries are able to sustainably increase their production of fish and other aquatic foods.
