Training and Development : What's New

FLDP Spanish Version:
FLDP courses in Spanish may soon be available to CGIAR staff. Discussions have been on-going with the Hay Group’s Mexico City office, which has a well-trained team of consultants who can conduct the FLDP in Spanish. Petr Kosina, one of the FLDP co-facilitators from CIMMYT, Mexico, has been on hand to ensure that the course material and diagnostics offered are in line with the existing FLDP course, which was tailor-made for the CGIAR. Depending on demand, the Spanish language FLDP course may be available in CIMMYT as early as October/November 2007. Please contact SAS HR for more information.

Scientific Writing Course:
Following numerous requests from HR Managers for scientific writing courses for CGIAR staff, SAS HR has identified a company that offers a wide range of capacity-building training courses tailored to meet the communication needs of research organizations and NGOs. Scriptoria courses can help staff write clear reports and effective promotional materials, and generally improve the quality of their scientific articles, thereby increasing the chance of publication. A proposed three-day course will focus on scientific writing for specialized and non-specialized audiences, and help staff write donor reports, funding proposals and journal articles. Please contact SAS HR for more information on organizing a Scientific Writing Course at your Center.

Facilitation to the Fore:
Come September, CGIAR staff will be able to take part in a Training of Facilitators Workshop using Visualization in Participatory Programmes (VIPP). Participants will learn alternatives to the usual way of planning and conducting workshops, seminars, training sessions, etc. The methods highlighted during the various sessions will ensure that the viewpoints of all participants will be heard and processed.
This introductory workshop, which is to be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand, from 24 to 28 September 2007, is designed as a sequence of tasks and challenges that will help participants master the practical skills of facilitation. At the end of the event, staff will be able to design, organize, prepare, facilitate, evaluate and document small workshops, participatory group events, planning sessions, office meetings and retreats. Facilitators and trainers of development programs at international agencies and NGOs, as well as those involved in public programs in Southeast Asia are encouraged to attend. For more information, please contact SAS HR.

FLDP Follow-Up:
The CGIAR has invested heavily in the development of its managers through the FLDP. Since it was first introduced in 2004, the program has impacted more than a 100 participants from various CGIAR Centers. There have also been many requests for a follow-up program to help sustain motivation and development. Following discussions between Hay Group consultant Sharon Crabtree and FLDP co-facilitators from the CGIAR, a follow-up module has been fleshed out. While the FLDP’s focus is on personal leadership, the two-day follow-up module will emphasize team leadership. Day One will look at individual progress in the context of the CGIAR, whereas Day Two will shift the emphasis to the development of others. In order to reduce costs, it has been suggested the follow-up module be organized back-to-back with scheduled FLDP sessions.
