Title: Issues on Gene Flow and Germplasm Management. 2005.

This publication is the result of extensive discussions within IPGRI that highlighted the need to identify approaches and procedures to manage germplasm and gene flow, whether from traditionally bred or genetically engineered varieties, to effectively conserve plant genetic resources. This publication compiles the contributions of several authors who address the subject of gene flow from a science-based perspective and its implications for germplasm management.

Title: Defensive Publishing: A Strategy for Maintaining Intellectual Property as Public Goods – Briefing Paper No. 53. 2002.

Scientific research generates intellectual property – new knowledge and ideas which, initially at least, belong solely to the creative enterprise which did the research. The effective exploitation of this innovation leads to a range of strategies. The process of ‘defensive publication’ is just one of the approaches which can be used. Defensive publication is one mechanism for disclosing an innovation to the public that allows a researcher to retain the freedom to practice their innovation without fear of being threatened by competitive patents. This paper will consider some of the factors, which make for effective defensive publication, and the strengths and weaknesses of some commonly available mechanisms, with which to achieve a defensive publication.

Title: Humanitarian Use Licences. 2005.

Authors: Dr Sean Butler

Source/Contributor: CAS-IP (Hosted by Bioversity International) /  University of Cambridge, UK

Pages: 4
Language: English

The concept of the Humanitarian Use Licence would allow CGIAR and the Centres to work within existing intellectual property systems to ensure free access to intellectual property assets. Although the precise terms of the Licences are still under discussion, they could become the primary vehicle for providing effective access to proprietary technology for developing countries.
