The Rockefeller Foundation
The Rockefeller Foundation was one of sixteen original members of the CGIAR, though its involvement predates the establishment of the Group in 1971, dating back to the joint food crops program in Mexico in 1943 that was a precursor of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). In collaboration with the Ford Foundation, Rockefeller went on to establish the four international agricultural research centers which together would later become the original Centers of the CGIAR: the International Rice Research Institute (1959), CIMMYT (1963), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) (1967).
