Mexico

Mexico became a member of the CGIAR in 1980, and hosts the CGIAR's International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT). The joint food crop program sponsored by the Government of Mexico and the Rockefeller Foundation program began in 1943 and marked the beginning of modern international agricultural research. It was out of this collaboration that was developed the first semidwarf wheat varieties which would one day be instrumental in bringing about the Green Revolution. Mexico's official support to the CGIAR and its Centers is provided through the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales y Agropecuarias (INIFAP) in the Ministry of Agriculture.
