India
India became a member of the CGIAR in 1981, though its involvement
with the CGIAR and international agricultural research dates
back much further. The hope of extending the productivity
gains of the Green Revolution in North India and Pakistan
to other areas in the developing world was in large measure
the impetus that led to the establishment of the CGIAR in
1971. In 1972, the CGIAR's International Crops Research Institute
for the Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) was established outside
Hyderabad in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The
Indian Council on Agricultural Research (ICAR) administers
one of the developing world's largest national agricultural
research systems, and its collaboration with CGIAR Centers
represents one of the CGIAR's longest and most extensive partnerships.
India is also the home of the M.S. Swaminathan Center for
Research on Sustainable Agricultural and Rural Development.
India's official support to the CGIAR is provided through
the Department of Agriculture, Research and Education in the
Ministry of Agriculture. The 1994 CGIAR Mid Term Meeting was
held in New Delhi.
