The Ford Foundation

The Ford Foundation was one of sixteen original members of the CGIAR, though its involvement predates the establishment of the Group in 1971, dating back to the establishment of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines in 1959. In collaboration with the Rockefeller Foundation, Ford went on to establish three more international agricultural research centers which would later become the original Centers of the CGIAR: the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in 1963, and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in 1967.
