Challenge Program Directors
Jean-Marcel Ribaut
Director, Generation Challenge Program
Jean-Marcel Ribaut has a background in plant physiology and genetics. His main research interests are in understanding the genetic basis of, and the underlying physiological and metabolic pathways that influence plant performance under abiotic stress – particularly drought. Other major research interests are innovations in molecular breeding.
Prior to becoming Director of the CGIAR Generation Challenge Program in 2005, Jean-Marcel worked at the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), Mexico. There, he became Deputy Director of the Genetic Resources Programme in 2003 and Biotechnology Group Leader in 2004.
Jean-Marcel has a particular interest in promoting modern breeding methods to hasten crop improvement in the developing world. He believes that true partnerships and solid capacity building can overcome some of the bottlenecks in research for development, and that developing-country partners are key actors and leaders in research.
Jean-Marcel holds a PhD in plant physiology from Lausanne University, Switzerland. He has experience in agricultural biotechnology and plant breeding, project and finance management, and policy formulation, as well as skills for leading dispersed global research and development teams.
