  • Jorge Alonso Beltrán won the Best technical work award given by the Central American Cooperative Program for Crop and Livestock Improvement (with Jairo Morales and Juan Carlos Zeledón).
  • Juan Manuel Bueno and César Cardona won the Hernán Alcaráz Viecco National Entomology Award (First Place) given at the XXVII National Entomology Congress, Montería, Colombia.
  • Guillermo Sotelo, César Cardona and John W. Miles won the Hernán Alcaráz Viecco' National Entomology Award (Second Place); as above.
  • Juliana Osorio and César Cardona won the Francisco Luis Gallego Award (First Place); as above.
  • Paola Fory, Guillermo Sotelo and César Cardona won the Francisco Luis Gallego Award (Second Place); as above.
  • Lee Calvert received a plaque recognizing CIAT for its contribution to rice development in Brazil at First Brazilian Congress on the Rice Production Chain, Santa Catarina.
  • Marc Chatel was awarded a Plaque of Recognition at the 4th National Rice Day held in Santa Cruz, Bolivia.
  • CIAT won the 'Best Legal Defense' award for legally challenging a U.S. patent on Mexican yellow beans and for defending the Trust Agreement between FAO and CGIAR on behalf of farmers worldwide.

  • Patrick C. Wall was bestowed with the condecoration "To merit to Bolivian Agriculture"
  • Norman E. Borlaug received the Public Welfare Medal of the National Academy of Sciences.
  • Wilfred Mwangi was awarded the Elder of the Order of the Burning Spear (EBS) for the distinguished services rendered to Kenya.
    · Jesus Moncada de la Fuente received the Centeotl Award from President Vicente Fox of Mexico
  • Surinder K. Vasal was awarded the Chinese Friendship Award; Jin Qui Award from the People's Government Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Special commendation for exceptional support provided to World Food Prize Youth Institute -International Internship Program.
  • Sanjaya Rajaram was awarded India's top civil award, Padma Shree; he also won the Inaugural Crawford Fund Derek Tribe Award.
  • Abdul Mujeeb Kazi was elected a Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America.
  • Evangelina Villegas was bestowed the "Lázaro Cárdenas" award by President Vicente Fox of Mexico.
  • Shivaji Pandey was elected as Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy (ASA) and Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America.
  • Wenceslao Almazán was chosen as the winning design for use in the trademark of the XIX International Marathon of Mexico City.
  • M.M. Kohli was presented with a Plaque of Honor by Government of Paraguay.
  • Rolf Sommer won The Josef-G. Knoll-Science Award.
  • Jose Crossa was elected member of the Mexican Academy of Science, fellow of the Agronomy Society of America, and elected fellow of the Crop Science Society of America.
  • Mauricio Bellon was elected member of the Mexican Academy of Science.
  • Reynaldo Villarreal was elected a Fellow of the Crop Science Society of America; received Certificate of Merit, Sichuan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Certificate of Recognition as Team Member "Drought-Tolerant Wheat Team"
  • Bent Skovmand was elected Fellow of The American Society of Agronomy.

CIP

  • Carlos Ochoa received the Knight Commander of the Order of Merit Medal for Distinguished Services.
  • UPWARD project received the Philippines' Pagasa Award given annually by the National Civil Service Commission.
  • Natural Resources Management Group received a "Best Session" award for their poster explaining the role of geo-spatial tools in addressing the problems of developing country agriculture at 3rd International Conference on Geo-spatial Information in Agriculture and Forestry.
  • Luis Salazar won the Shandong Friendship Award given by the Shandong Academy of Agricultural Sciences, People's Republic of China.
  • CIP received a Certificate and Medal of Recognition for contributing to the development of Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina.

ICARDA

  • Adel El-Beltagy was elected Academician (Foreign Member) of the Tajik Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
  • Rajendra S. Paroda was elected Fellow of the Georgian Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Armenian Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Acamedician (Foreign Member) of the Tajik Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
  • Miloudi Nachit won the royal medal "Chevalier d'Honneur," awarded by His Majesty the King of Morocco.
  • Miloudi Nachit, Mustapha El-Bouhssini and Ahmed Amri shared the 2002 Prize for Research and Development in Morocco with N. Nserallah and S. Lhaloui of INRA, Morocco.
  • John Ryan was elected Chairman of Commission on Soil Fertility and Plant Nutrition at the International Soil Science Congress.

ICRISAT

  • William Dar won the World Education and Learning (WEAL) Award given by the World Institution Building Programme; subsequently, he was appointed to the U.N. Millennium Project Task Force on Hunger.
  • Jagdish Kumar won the International Pulse Improvement Award by the North American Pulse Improvement Association, Fargo, North Dakota.
  • O.P. Rupela and team's poster was rated the best poster (among 250 entries) at the 42nd Annual Conference of the Association of Microbiologists of India.
  • Poster by N. Seetharama, H.C. Sharma, and group on Development and Testing of Transgenic Sorghum, won first prize at the International Symposium on Molecular Approaches to Improved Crop Productivity and Quality at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
  • P. Lavakumar won the ICAR-Jawaharlal Nehru Award for outstanding doctoral dissertation.
  • Farid Waliyar term as a member of the National Centre for Agricultural Research (CNRA), Mali was renewed for three years.
  • Visitors Services Unit won the award for "Best Stall" at an Agricultural Fair held at the Acharya Ranga Agricultural University.
  • A. Ramakrishna, S.N. Nigam and S.P. Wani were awarded the Medal for Agriculture and Rural Development by the Government of Vietnam.
  • Ousmane Youm was nominated to the Editorial Advisory Board of Insect Science and its Application.

IFPRI

  • Per Pinstrup-Andersen, Rajul Pandya-Lorch, and Mark Rosegrant won the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) 2002 Award for Distinguished Policy Contribution to IFPRI's 2020 Vision for Food, Agriculture, and the Environment Initiative.

IITA

  • Jacqueline Hughes was made a chief - the Iyalode of the Isan Kingdom in Ikiti State, Nigeria.
  • Kristina Roing won the best poster award at the 17th World Congress of Soil Sciences, Bangkok, Thailand.
  • Rose Umelo won the Macmillan Publishers Prize for childrens literature for her book "Who are You."
  • IITA won the AE50 Award for developing a "Cassava Grating System" in the Outstanding Innovations in Product and Systems Technology given by the American Society of Agricultural Engineers.

IRRI

  • L.M. Borines, E.D. Redoña, B. Porter, F. White, M.P. Natural, C.M. Vera Cruz and Hei Leung received Best Paper Award of the Philippine Phytopathological Society, Inc.
  • Darshan Brar was named Honorary Fellow of the Crop Science Society of the Philippines
  • Josie Lynn A. Catindig and K.L. Heong received the Best Poster award of the Philippine Association of Entomologists, Inc.
  • Swapan K. Datta, Niranjan Baisakh, Marta de Vasconcelos, Lina Torrizo, Editha Abrigo, Norman Oliva, Md. Khalekuzzaman, Sellappan Krishnan, Mayank Rai, Saida Rehana, Annie Setter, Jing Tan, and Karabi Datta received the Best Poster Award during the 32nd Annual Scientific Conference of the Crop Science Society of the Philippines.
  • Peter Fredenburg named regional winner, Asia, of the 2001 IUCN-Reuters Environmental Media Awards.
  • Carmelo O. Garcia and James E. Hill received the Best Paper Award in Weed Science during the 33rd Annual Scientific Conference of the Pest Management Council of the Philippines.
  • Thomas George appointed 2002-2003 Reuters Digital Vision Fellow at Stanford University.
  • Glenn Gregorio was appointed Honorary Scientist of the Rural Development Administration (RDA) of Korea.
  • K.L. Heong was awarded a Doctor of Science (DSc) degree by Imperial College.
  • Gurdev S. Khush was awarded a Presidential Citation by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the Philippines; elected Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; elected Foreign Academician of the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences; and was named an adopted and distinguished son of the Province of Laguna.
  • J.K. Ladha named Fellow of the American Society of Agronomy.

  • Tom Mew was named Fellow of the American Phytopathological Society and received the Friendship Prize 2002 awarded by the Jiangsu Provincial Government, China.
  • Calvin Qualset received the 2002 Charles A. Black Award for his life's work in germplasm preservation and enhancement given by Council for Agricultural Science and Technology (CAST).
  • Domingo Tabbal was appointed member of the Board of Agricultural Engineering by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of Philippines.
  • Casiana M. Vera Cruz received the Philippine Phytopathogical Society Inc., GO Ocfemia Award in Plant Pathology.
  • Vietnam-IRRI IPM Project received the St. Andrews Prize (with K.L. Heong and Monina Escalada).
  • S.S. Virmani was elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS); received the Agriculture and Rural Development Medal (with Yuan Long-ping and Dat Van Tran), and received the International Service in Crop Science Award from the Crop Science Society of America.

  • Brian Perry received the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for services to veterinary science in developing countries.
  • Abdul Kamara won the Joseph G. Knoll Science Award in Germany for outstanding doctoral dissertation.

  • Nitish Jha won the Harold K. Schneider Prize for 2002 of the Society for Economic Anthropology
    Marna de Lange won the Dr. Hassan Ismail Memorial International Award 2002
