General Information

Overview
The Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique (INRA), Morocco, will host the 2005 Annual General Meeting (AGM05) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) in Marrakech, Morocco in December. The CGIAR will welcome 1,000 international and Moroccan policymakers, agricultural research experts, scientists and development specialists to the annual meeting. Participants will discuss ways in which agricultural research, technology and food policy initiatives can better stimulate economic growth in Africa and beyond, and develop new ways of working to ensure that world class science continues to address critical global challenges while delivering real benefits to poor people.

Invitations and Administrative Matters

Registration/Accreditation

All participants are required to be accredited and in possession of an AGM05 ID badge. The ID badge MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHILE ON SITE and will be required for entry at all venues and meeting areas.

The registration information provided will be used in the preparation of participants' badges and list of participants, for arranging airport/hotel transfers, and for hotel accommodation.

To ensure hotel room availability and reservations at the special rates, participants are requested to complete and submit their registration forms at the latest by Friday, September 30, 2005.

Please also note that photographic ID badges will be required for AGM05. For this purpose, cameras will be set up on-site and the AGM05 Registration Desk will open daily at Palais des Congrès , 0800 hours - 1800 hours Friday, December 2 to Thursday, December 8. Participant registration as soon as possible after arrival in Marrakech is encouraged in order to help minimize any potential processing delays.

Participants must register with the AGM05 Registration Desk to be photographed, as necessary, and collect their meeting badges, documents and invitations to social events. There is no registration fee, but participants will be responsible for their personal expenses.

Other Useful Information:

Currency and Banking: The local currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Major foreign currencies can be exchanged at official currency exchange offices (Bureau de Change). There is no charge for this service. Visitors will receive a receipt that you must retain in order to be able to reconvert any currency at the end of your stay. Marrakech (and other big cities) have few ATMs. US$1 equals approximately 8.5 MAD.

Electrical Supply: Power supply in Morocco is 220 Volts, 50 Hertz. The Moroccan outlet system is the same as the French.

Electronic Equipment: Meeting participants are advised to bring their own laptops. WiFi Internet connections are available at all hotels.

Medical Facilities/Insurance: Delegates should make their own arrangements for insurance to cover medical, surgical or hospital expenses. The hotels can provide medical assistance.

No vaccination is necessary to enter Morocco. The usage of sun block is recommended during prolonged exposure.

Postal Service: Post offices are open from 0800 hours to 1600 hours, Monday through Friday. Most large hotels also provide postal service at front desks.

Telecommunications: The country code for Morocco is 212 followed by an area code and by a six digit phone number. The code for Casablanca is +22; Marrakech +44; and Rabat +37.

From Morocco, international calls are made by dialing 00 followed by the country code and phone number.

Phone booths and cyber cafes are available.

Tipping: A 15 percent tip is customary for food and beverage service.

Water: Bottled water is available and recommended.

Shopping: Monday to Saturday from 1000 hours to 2000 hours. Most shops are closed on Sunday, except main shopping centers.

Museums: Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 1000 hours to 1800 hours; closed on Monday.

Banks: Open from Monday to Friday from 0830 hours to 1500 hours; some banks close at 1700 hours.

Public Offices: Open from Monday to Friday from 0900 hours to 1800 hours.
